How it works

For Renters.

30% of Australians rent. Less than 5% of renters have access to solar. That is not a technology problem. It is an ownership problem.

3 million

Australian households rent. Most are without solar with no way to change it.

You pay the bill. But you can't access cheaper energy.

If you rent, you have no way to bring your energy costs down. Prices keep going up and there is nothing you can do about it.

Rooftop solar and battery can cut a household electricity bill by hundreds of dollars a year. But to get one installed, someone has to spend thousands upfront. That someone would be your landlord. And the savings go to you, not them.

This is the split incentive. The person who pays for the system is not the person who benefits from it. So the system never gets installed. And renters keep paying full price.

How NRN works for homeowners step 2
How NRN removes the barrier for renters

NRN removes the barrier.

NRN pays for the solar and battery system. NRN owns it. NRN installs it, monitors it, and maintains it for the life of the agreement.

Because NRN owns the system, the landlord does not have to spend a dollar. And because the landlord does not have to spend a dollar, there is no split incentive. The barrier that locks renters out of solar disappears.

You get access to cheaper energy. The landlord improves their property. NRN earns a return on the infrastructure it owns. Everyone is aligned from day one.

Cheaper energy. No upfront cost. No hassle.

Your landlord pays nothing

NRN owns the system and covers all costs. Your landlord doesn't spend a dollar - that's why they say yes.

It works even if you move

The system stays with the property. Your lease ending doesn't change anything. The next tenant benefits too.

One plan. One bill. Lower rate.

You stay with a participating energy retailer. Your plan includes solar and battery behind it - that's what makes it cheaper.

Questions renters ask us.

Who owns the solar and battery system?

NRN owns the system for the duration of the agreement and is responsible for installation, operation, monitoring and maintenance. You do not own it and neither does your landlord.

Does my landlord need to agree?

Yes. Because the system is installed on the property, your landlord will need to agree to the installation. NRN works directly with landlords to make this straightforward. The landlord pays nothing.

Do I pay for maintenance?

No. Ongoing maintenance, monitoring and fault repairs are covered by NRN for the life of the agreement.

Does the system work in a blackout?

No. The NRN system operates only when connected to the grid. If there is a power outage, the system will automatically shut down. This is a safety requirement for all grid-connected solar systems in Australia.
